The Storyline
San Jose Earthquakes (11th, 3-6-1, 10pts) vs Portland Timbers (2nd, 5-2-3, 18pts)
The Timbers went into Carson, Calif. on a mission last Sunday and left with all three points following the 4-2 result.
Winger Antony shined all night in the City of Angels, dishing out three assist and earning MLS Team of the Matchday honors. Forwards Kevin Kelsy and Santiago Moreno kept their scoring form up and Designated Player Jonathan RodrĂguez scored his first goal of the season from the spot, effectively icing the game for the Timbers late in the matchup with the defending champs.
Portland's high-scoring offense – three or more goals scored in five of last six games – has the Timbers in second in the stacked Western Conference as they head into the third of three-straight bouts with California-based clubs.
The Western Conference battles continue for Portland as they head to PayPal Park for the first of two encounters in 2025 with the San Jose Earthquakes.
Despite being currently below the playoff line, the Quakes are tied with both Portland and Vancouver for the most goals scored in MLS: 20. They are led on the attack by former MLS Golden Boot winner Josef MartĂnez (6 goals, 1 assist) and former MLS Newcomer of the Year Cristian 'Chicho' Arango (6 goals) and DP Cristian Espinoza (2 goals, 5 assists).
The Timbers have been dangerous on the road to start the year (3-1-1) and will look to secure their fourth away victory on Saturday night in the Bay Area.
