The Storyline
Portland and San Diego are tied 1-1 in the Round One Best-of-3 Series following San Diego’s 2-1 win on Oct. 26, and the Timbers’ 2-2 regulation draw and 3-2 PK shootout win on Nov. 1. A regulation win or another penalty kick shootout victory in San Diego on Sunday secures Portland’s ticket to the Western Conference Semifinals.
In 13 elimination scenarios all-time, Portland holds a strong record of 6-3-4. Notably, in playoffs penalty kick shootout scenarios, the Timbers are 3-2 all-time.
The Timbers have recorded eight multi-goal road playoff matches while only being shutout three times. In those eight multi-goal games, Portland recorded five wins and just two losses.
In eight road games where Portand has needed a result (win or draw) to avoid elimination, the Timbers are 5-3-0 all-time. Portland’s last road postseason result came on Nov. 25, 2021, a 1-0 win at the Colorado Rapids that advanced Portland to the 2021 Western Conference Final.
Portland has just one playoffs penalty kick shootout experience on the road – a 4-2 win over Seattle Sounders FC on Nov. 8, 2018.
Should the Timbers advance out of the Round One Best-of-3 Series, all their remaining Audi 2025 MLS Cup Playoff matches (single-game elimination) will be played on the road.
