The Storyline

The Timbers last played in the historic tournament in 2023, reaching the Round of 32, following a 3-1 win over USL Championship side Orange County SC. Ultimately, Portland would fall to Real Salt Lake in a hard-fought 4-3 result, ending their 2023 Open Cup journey.

Following a one-year hiatus, the Timbers are once again a part of the most historic soccer tournament in the U.S. Commencing their 2024 journey in the Round of 32, Portland has been drawn with MLS NEXT Pro club Tacoma Defiance.

The Tacoma Defiance – the MLS NEXT Pro affiliate club of Seattle Sounders FC – have started off their 2025 regular season on the front foot. The Defiance currently lead the MLS NEXT Pro Western Conference after seven games (5-2-0, 15pts) and have won four-straight heading into the USOC matchup. With 22 goals netted thus far, Tacoma has the highest-scoring offense in the league. Forward Osaze De Rosario – son of former MLS great Dwayne De Rosario – leads the frontline for Tacoma, having scored eight goals in just five league appearances (all starts). His performances in April earned De Rosario MLS NEXT Pro Player of the Month honors.
