PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers Academy teams continued their stretch of road games over the weekend, visiting San Juan Soccer Club in Mather, Calif. It was a successful trip for both teams, recording shutouts in their respective matches and the Timbers U-18s defeating San Juan 6-0.
The Timbers U-18 Academy (3-3-2, 11pts) defeated the U-18 side for San Juan Soccer Club 6-0 at the Mather Soccer Complex, recording their largest margin of victory in a match since joining the U.S. Soccer Development Academy in 2012-13. Forward Anthony Macchione (Camas, Wash.) tallied a first-half brace, scoring twice in the opening eight minutes of the contest. Before the whistle blew for halftime, the Timbers U-18s had received goals from Reid Baez (Salem, Ore.) and Jake Bray (West Linn, Ore.), scored five minutes part in the 32nd and 37th minutes, and received an own goal to extend their lead to 5-0. Sam Werner (Beaverton, Ore.) capped the scoring with an early second-half goal in the 48th minute.
Goalkeepers Joe Wheelwright (Portland, Ore.) and Toby Holstein (Lake Oswego, Ore.) combined for the second shutout of the season for the Timbers U-18s. Macchione leads the team in goal-scoring with four goals in four games in the 2013-14 campaign.
The Timbers U-16 Academy (2-4-2, 8pts) picked up their third shutout of the season in a scoreless draw against San Juan’s U-16 squad. The Timbers U-16s held the majority of the possession in the match and had a notable performance from midfielder Carlos Rodriguez-Diaz (Vancouver, Wash.), keeping San Juan’s attack at bay.
