At Talen Energy Stadium Sunday in Chester, Penn. Sunday, Timbers Academy alum and Stanford Cardinal redshirt junior midfielder Sam Werner (above, left) scored the game-winning, sudden death, double-overtime goal for his side to lift Stanford to a 1-0 win over Indiana and clinch their third-straight NCAA College Cup.

The Lake Oswego High School grad pressured the Hoosier backline to steal the ball in the box and then lofted a perfectly placed shot into the back of the net. It was only the seventh goal Indiana had allowed all season.

Foster Langsdorf, the two-time Pac-12 Player of the Year, MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist and fellow Timbers Academy alum, also played in the championship match for the Cardinal tallying three shots in the game. Langsdorf, a native of Vancouver, Wash., had a game-winning goal of his own in Stanford's 2-0 win over Akron in the semifinals–a match that also featured a second half goal as well from Werner.

It is the first time since Virginia won three-straight national championships (1991-1994) that an NCAA D1 school has accomplished the three-peat. Moreover, Stanford women's team also won the 2017 NCAA College Cup which makes the Cardinal the first university in D1 history to win both the men's and women's soccer title in the same season.
