Canadian international, MLS All-Star joins Portland in exchange for $625,000 in GAM and an international roster spot

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers have acquired Canadian defender Kamal Miller from Inter Miami CF in exchange for $500,000 in 2024 General Allocation Money (GAM), $125,000 in 2025 GAM and an international roster spot, the club announced today. Miller will be under contract with the club through 2026 with a club option in 2027. He will occupy an international spot on the roster, pending a physical and a receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 visa.

“We are excited to welcome Kamal Miller to the Portland Timbers,” said Timbers General Manager Ned Grabavoy. “Strengthening our defensive group this offseason was a priority. Kamal provides us a great player, competitor, and flexibility along our backline. We look forward to him joining our group as our preseason work gets underway.”

Miller, 26, has spent the past five seasons playing in MLS for Orlando City SC, CF Montreal and Inter Miami CF. In 110 regular season appearances (102 starts), the defender has registered three goals and six assists through five seasons since 2019. Acquired by Miami in 2023, the defender tallied 22 appearances (21 starts) and helped Miami to win the 2023 Leagues Cup. Notably, Miller was also part of CF Montreal’s 2022 Eastern Conference semifinal run and was a 2022 MLS All-Star.

Internationally, Miller has made 41 appearances (37 starts) for the Canadian Men’s National Team, tallying three assists. Most recently, Miller logged two full 90-minute appearances in the Concacaf Nations League Finals against Jamaica in November of 2023. Notably, Miller was part of Canada’s 2022 FIFA World Cup roster, starting in all three of Canada’s group stage matches. He was a part of Canada’s second all-time World Cup appearance in 2022, helping the team qualify with 12 appearances in 14 Concacaf qualifying matches. Miller has been a part of Canada’s U-16, U-20 and U-23 teams before making his senior debut in 2019.

“Kamal was our number one target when I first got to Portland. He brings great quality and experience being a regular for Canada, having played at a top level in the World Cup and being one of the top center backs in the league,” said Timbers head coach Phil Neville. “Kamal is a winner that provides us with character and personality and will help us get stronger in the backline. Can’t wait to get working with him again, having worked with him at both Miami and Canada.”

The Ontario, Canada native began his professional career in 2019 when he was selected 27ths overall in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft by Orlando City SC. Miller made his professional debut in Orlando’s 2019 season opener in a 2-2 draw against New York City FC on March 2. Miller was also a part of Orlando’s roster in the 2020 MLS is Back Tournament, making it to the final before falling to the Timbers, 2-1.
