Match Preview:
The Portland Timbers close out a weekend with back-to-back matches with an international exhibition match against Mexico’s Club Americá reserves at PGE Park presented by Tecate. The Timbers face the Mexican side in their first of three scheduled exhibitions in 2009.
In league play, the Timbers extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches last night with their first win over the Vancouver Whitecaps since the postseason in 2007; Portland had lost four straight to the Whitecaps entering Saturday’s match. With the win, the Timbers moved into third place in the USL First Division, just one point behind second-place Charleston Battery (4-0-4, 16pts).
Ryan Pore
delivered his third goal of the season on a penalty kick in the sixth minute to become the team’s leading scorer. Forward
George Josten
tallied his first goal of the season late in the first half. The Timbers have scored at two goals in three of their last four matches and have out-scored opponents 7-3 in that span.
Tonight, the Timbers face their fourth Mexican opponent since the 2007 season when they square off against the Club Americá reserves. Portland is 2-1-0 against teams from Mexico at PGE Park and has a 2-2-0 mark overall against Mexican clubs since 2001. Last season, the Timbers faced top-flight clubs Monarcas Morelia and U.A.N.L. Tigres at PGE Park in exhibition contests. After a 2-0 loss to Morelia, the Timbers responded with a 2-0 shutout against Tigres, using goals from forward Byron Alvarez and defender Justin Thompson.
Timbers defeat Club America reserves 4-1 at PGE Park
