PORTLAND, Ore.
- The Portland Timbers feature two players on the A-League Team of the Week, as defender Lee Morrison and midfielder Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar were recognized as two of the top players in the league for their efforts in Week 14, it was announced Tuesday.
Alcaraz-Cuellar tallied the game-winning, “golden goal” in the final seconds of stoppage time of double overtime in Saturday’s 4-3 win over the Seattle Sounders at Qwest Field. In dramatic fashion, Alcaraz-Cuellar redirected a cross from teammate Byron Alvarez in the waning seconds of the 110th minute to ensure the Timbers’ fifth-straight victory over rival Seattle, dating back to last season. Alcaraz-Cuellar also collected an assist earlier in the game for a three-point night.
Morrison scored his first goal of the season in the Seattle match when Alex Bengard sent a long free kick onto the boot of Morrison, who dialed it into the back of the net in the 35th minute to tie the contest. In addition to the goal, he was recognized for solid defensive play throughout Saturday’s win.
The honor was Morrison’s first of the season, while Alcaraz-Cuellar garnered the award during Week Six.
