PORTLAND
, Ore.
– The Portland Timbers begin preparation for the upcoming 2008 USL First Division campaign on Monday, March 10, when players and coaches report for preseason training camp at PGE Park. Portland opens its 2008 schedule April 17 against the Puerto Rico Islanders.
Reporting for the five-week training camp are signed Timbers players and other invited players competing for final roster spots. Under second-year head coach
Gavin Wilkinson
, preseason camp will consist of daily training sessions and a series of informal scrimmages. These scrimmages will not be open to the public.
The Timbers’ preseason schedule also features exhibition matches against Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes on March 28 and Gonzaga University on March 30.
“Our preseason matches against San Jose and Gonzaga will be great tests for us,” said Wilkinson. “Competing against high-caliber teams from different levels gives us an indication as to where we are as we approach the beginning of the 2008 season.”
