PORTLAND, Ore.
– The Portland Timbers have signed defender
Kevin Goldthwaite
for the remainder of the 2010 USSF Division-2 Pro League season, it was announced today pending league and USSF approval.
Goldthwaite, 27, joins the Timbers after six seasons in Major League Soccer, including the last three seasons with the New York Red Bulls. He returns for a second stint with the Timbers after being loaned to Portland during his MLS rookie season in 2005.
A native of Sacramento, Calif., Goldthwaite was selected 17th overall by the San Jose Earthquakes in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft. He registered three goals and five assists in 87 regular-season matches played in MLS, suiting up for San Jose, Houston Dynamo (2006-07), Toronto FC (2007) and New York (2007-10). Goldthwaite is expected to be fit to play for the Timbers in two weeks.
Goldthwaite helped lead the Red Bulls to the 2008 Western Conference championship and an appearance in the 2008 MLS Cup. He was named the club’s 2008 Defender of the Year, also scoring a career-high two goals in 28 games during the campaign. In Houston, Goldthwaite helped the Dynamo claim the 2006 MLS Cup, winning the first championship in franchise history.
While on loan with the Timbers in 2005, Goldthwaite logged 892 minutes in 10 matches, helping the Timbers to a USL First Division playoff appearance.
Goldthwaite played collegiate soccer at Notre Dame, where he garnered All-Big East first-team honors and was a semifinalist for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy.
