PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers today announced that defender Rodney Wallace has been called up by the Costa Rica National Team for a pair of upcoming international friendlies, starting Sunday against the Cuba National Team.

Wallace, 23, and Costa Rica square off against Cuba in a matchup of two 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup teams in Havana, Cuba. On Thursday, Dec. 22, the Costa Rica National Team heads to South America to play the Venezuela National Team at Estadio José “Pachencho” Romero.

Born in San Jose, Costa Rica, Wallace receives his second call-up with the Costa Rica National Team in 2011. He earned his first two caps for Costa Rica in September, scoring the game-winning goal in his international debut in a 1-0 win over the United States on Sept. 2. Wallace made his first international start Sept. 6 in Costa Rica’s friendly against Ecuador.

In 2011, Wallace played in 25 matches for the Timbers and registered two goals and two assists. He was named to MLSsoccer.com’s Team of the Week in Week 5 after scoring in back-to-back matches in April.
