U.S. OPEN CUP MATCH RECAP | Portland Timbers 2, San Jose Earthquakes 0

PORTLAND, Ore. –  The Portland Timbers, led by goals from Jeremy Ebobisse and Dairon Asprilla, defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 Wednesday night at Providence Park in the Fourth Round of the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

The Timbers now advance to the Round of 16 with opponent and date to be announced.

Match Moments

10' - CHANCE (POR) - After beating his man with some nifty foot work, Portland's Jack Barmby rolled the ball towards Jeremy Ebobisse whose cross deflected to Marvin Loria. Loria's close range shot was tipped just over the bar by San Jose goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell.

28' - GOAL (POR) - The Timbers, pressuring the San Jose backline, forced a turnover with the ball squirting free to Ebobisse. Ebobisse carried into the 18-yard box, stutter stepped the ball back to his left foot and then curled a shot into the top far corner for a 1-0 Timbers lead.

62' - CHANCE (SJ) - On a long cross from the Quakes left side, midfielder Tommy Thompson lurked on the back post. He looped a header up and just over the bar.

66' - GOAL (POR) - The Timbers broke forward on a counter led by Diego Chara. As he entered the final third, Chara side-footed a diagonal ball to a wide open Dairon Asprilla on the right wing. Asprilla took a touch and then tucked his shot past Tarbell for a 2-0 Timbers lead.

68' - CHANCE (POR) - Portland forward Foster Langsdorf, who had just subbed on, glanced a header barely wide of the left post.

82' - CLEARANCE (POR) - Timbers goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh came off his line and out of his box to head a dangerous ball that had been sent forward by San Jose.

83' - CHANCE (SJ) - On a Quakes free kick, the ball was served back in towards forward Danny Hoesen. He flicked a shot that went narrowly over the cross bar.

88' - BLOCK (POR) - Hoesen was busy again as he managed to shake two Timbers defenders and get free. His final shot was blocked, however, by Vytas in the box.

The Timbers return to MLS regular-season play Saturday when they host Sporting Kansas City at Providence Park. Kickoff is set for 7:30pm PT and will air on ROOT SPORTS.
