ROCHESTER, N.Y.
- The Rochester Raging Rhinos tallied three first-half goals and handed the Portland Timbers their first regular-season defeat since July 2004 with a 3-1 victory Friday night at Frontier Field.
Kirk Wilson scored twice and added an assist for a five-point night, as Rochester snapped Portland’s 16-game, regular-season unbeaten streak.
Portland’s Dan Antoniuk collected the lone goal of the evening for the Timbers, dialing in a penalty kick in the 82nd after being taken down from behind by Rochester goalkeeper Scott Vallow.
The strike was Antoniuk’s second of the season.
Jonathan Bolanos started things off for Rochester (3-4-1, 10pts), stealing the ball from Shawn Saunders and making a run down the pitch. Taking a feed from Wilson, Bolanos drilled it into the back of the net from 20 yards out in the 20th minute.
Rochester struck again in the 23rd when Wilson received a pass from Bolanos and put a left foot on the ball, sending it past Portland goalkeeper Josh Saunders.
Frank Sanfillippo found Wilson again near the far post in the 34th minute. Perfectly positioned for the strike, Wilson tallied his second goal of the evening and his fifth in two matches.
Josh Saunders faced 21 shots and roped in eight saves. Despite allowing three goals, defensive mistakes left the Portland ‘keeper in a vulnerable spot all evening.
Rochester held the advantage on corner kicks 6-1 and on shots, 21-5.
The Timbers (3-1-3, 12pts) continue their four-game road trip tomorrow at Toronto, where they’ll take on the Lynx at 4:30 p.m. (Pacific).
