SEATTLE, Wash.
- Roger Levesque scored the winning goal as the Seattle Sounders defeated the Portland Timbers 3-1 at Qwest Field Saturday night.
The Sounders (7-8-4, 25pts) won the second game of a home-and-home series against the Timbers. Seattle also defeated the Timbers last night in Portland, 2-1. Seattle is now 5-1-1 in their last seven games, and tonight’s victory gave the Sounders the win in the season series, 2-1-1.
The Timbers (5-10-5. 20pts) took their sixth straight USL First Division loss. After reaching the top of the standings during an eight game unbeaten streak, the Timbers have since fallen to the 10th spot in the league.
Cam Weaver gave the Sounders an early 1-0 advantage 10 minutes into the first half. He snuck in behind the Timbers defense as Leighton O’Brien sent a cross inside the penalty box and Weaver placed his header across the goal, out of the reach of Timbers goalkeeper, Martin Hutton.
Timbers midfielder Luke Kreamalmeyer scored on a penalty kick in the 17th minute to level the score. Mike Randolph was taken down inside the penalty box and the official immediately pointed to the spot of the penalty. Kreamalmeyer sent a shot on the ground to the left side of the goal that Sounders goalkeeper Chris Eylander couldn’t stop.
In the 25th minute, Levesque collected a loose ball off of a corner kick from O’Brien and sent it past Hutton from close range to put the Sounders back on top 2-1.
Maykel Galindo added to the Sounders lead in the 59th minute when he took a pass from Ben Somoza and beat Hutton with a strong shot from 12 yards out.
Up next, the Timbers hit the road for their final games away from PGE Park this season. Portland faces off against Virginia Beach on July 27 and Toronto on July 29. Both matches kick off at 4:30 p.m. (Pacific). The Timbers play the final six games of the regular season at PGE Park.

“I thought the first 15-20 minutes we looked very good. We created two chances early, but they both hit the post. Mike Randolph was playing very well covering for Mamba Chisoni in the middle; he was going at people and creating. When he got sent off it was difficult for the morale of the team, because he was the guy playing the best soccer on the field. Now we need to patch things together as best we can with a team that is struggling. We need to look for small pieces of success throughout the rest of the season and build on that.”
NOTES:
Timbers goalkeeper Martin Hutton got the start tonight, it was his first regular season action. Hutton joined the Timbers on loan from the Houston Dynamo of MLS … Mike Randolph was shown a red card in the 42nd minute, leaving the Timbers with just 10 men on the field for the remainder of the match.
