Weekly pro honors announced - Week 11

Wicks and Corrie Players of the WeekTAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced the USL First Division and USL Second Division Teams of the Week for the 11th week of the season, honoring Portland’s Josh Wicks and Wilmington’s George Corrie as the Players of the Week, respectively. After suffering a 1-0 US Open Cup heartbreak in Seattle, the Timbers regrouped and behind stellar defensive performances led by goalkeeper Josh Wicks and handed their opposition a pair late 1-0 defeats. Two nights after their Open Cup elimination the Timbers traveled to San Francisco Thursday, and after a tight match in which they were outshot 14-4 on the night, Josh Wicks sent a long ball over the top of the Victory defense. Recent substitute David Hague beat his marker to the ball and calmly put it past Eric Reed in the 89th minute for his first professional goal and the game-winner. The Timbers returned home Saturday to face Miami. The visitors proved difficult and looked poised to leave with a share of the points with Haitian Gold Cup goalkeeper Gabard Fenelon making his first start and Josh Wicks posting four saves in a shutout performance. A free kick in the final moments in stoppage time, however, gave Andrew Gregor the opening he needed as he sent the long ball from 60 yards into the box and finding the head of Lawrence Olum to give the Timbers and Wicks the win. It has not been the best of seasons for a rebuilding Wilmington Hammerheads club, but veteran George Corrie helped extend the team’s current unbeaten run to four games (2-0-2) with their second consecutive 2-2 draw. After playing then unbeaten Cleveland to a 2-2 draw last week, the Hammerheads hosted the league-leading Charlotte Eagles Saturday night and rallied from a goal down twice through Corrie. A goal from Patrick Daka three minutes in put the Eagles on the board first with Corrie finding a rebound off the post at the half hour mark to put the game on level terms. Four minutes later Jamal Sutton put the Eagles up again. Nine minutes on the other side of the break Corrie charged into the box and put his second past Dan Benton to tie things up and give Wilmington their sixth draw of the season.
