Wilkinson Updates from England

Technical director Gavin Wilkinson wrapped up a busy weekend in England while on his first MLS-focused trip. He visited the EPL's Man City, took in a pair of great rivalry matches and spent Sunday with Sheffield Wednesday. Gavin Wilkinson, the technical director for the Timbers MLS franchise, spent time in the cities of Manchester and Sheffield over the weekend as part of a busy MLS-focused trip to England. He visited Premier League club Manchester City, experienced two intense rivalry matches and wrapped things with meetings at Sheffield Wednesday.

Wilkinson spent the day Friday visiting Man City and was able to tour its home venue, City of Manchester Stadium, arguably one of the top soccer grounds in the Premier League. He met with executives from several different departments throughout the club, including scouting, facilities, operations and community relations.

On Saturday, he attended one of the big rivalries in Premier League football as Man City played host to Manchester United at City of Manchester Stadium. Wilkinson was invited to watch the game from the chairman’s box for Man City, and was among 47,000-plus in attendance. United took home a 1-0 win on a 90th-minute goal.

Wilkinson then traveled approximately an hour and a half east to the city of Sheffield on Sunday, where he spent the day visiting with local club Sheffield Wednesday. Here's his update from Sunday's activities:

Today, I visited Sheffield Wednesday and watched the local derby against Sheffield United; the two drew 1-1. It was truly an amazing atmosphere. The passion from the stands was something I have only experienced a handful of times – 37,000 spectators living through the players.
I met a couple of players who may have an interest in the U.S. that would be great for our first year.
Due to the air quality from volcanic ash, my flight tomorrow has been cancelled.
