Match Preview:
The Timbers take a break from league play to play host to Argentina club Boca Juniors, one of the most successful clubs in the world, tonight in an international friendly at PGE Park. Tonight’s match is the second of four premium exhibition matches scheduled for the Timbers in 2010.
Tonight’s exhibition concludes Portland’s schedule for the month. Entering the game against Boca Juniors, the Timbers are still seeking their first win in May. The club has lost three of its last four league matches, posting a 0-3-1 record in May. Portland picked up a point in a 1-1 draw against AC St. Louis on May 15.
The Timbers face their second exhibition opponent this month, playing Costa Rican side Puntarenas FC on May 1 at PGE Park. Rookie forward
Bright Dike
(DEE-kay) scored his first professional goal in that match, but Portland surrendered three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 defeat.
Since 2005, the Timbers have hosted several international exhibition matches at PGE Park against opponents from Costa Rica, Canada, Mexico, Germany, England and Italy. Portland’s lineup of exhibition matches this season continues with Mexico’s Club Atlas on Sunday, July 11, at PGE Park and Manchester City of England’s Premier League on Saturday, July 17, at Merlo Field on the campus of the University of Portland.
The Timbers will be without the services of midfielder
Johan Claesson
(groin) and defender
Mamadou
Danso
(hamstring) due to injuries. Forward
Doug DeMartin
(ankle) is questionable for tonight’s match.
Portland returns to league play on Sunday, June 6, at PGE Park as it plays host to the Carolina RailHawks at 6 p.m. Tickets start at $12 in advance and are available through the PGE Park box office and Ticketmaster.
