As part of the Hispanic Metropolitan Chamber’s 2011 Scholarship Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, the Timbers proudly presented University of Portland student Julie Rodriguez of Beaverton, Ore., a $2,000 scholarship.
Rodriguez, a biology and Spanish major and chemistry minor at UP, is one of 45 students being honored for academic excellence and community involvement by the Chamber during its annual awards event at the Oregon Convention Center. Rodriguez is very active in extra-curricular activities on campus, having served as treasurer and secretary of M.E.Ch.A. (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan), in addition to being a member of the National Honor Society and Biological Honor Society. She also works as the school’s student diversity events coordinator, planning different events and discussions surrounding diversity on campus.
This year, the Hispanic Metropolitan Chamber awarded over $127,000 in scholarships to students throughout Oregon and southwest Washington.
Timbers COO Mike Golub represented the club and presented Rodriguez with her scholarship award.
