Saturday evening’s frenetic back-and-forth 5-3 loss for the Portland Timbers to the LA Galaxy was a match dominated by designated players. The LA trio of David Beckham, Robbie Keane, and Landon Donovan figured into all five of their goals with Beckham and Keane each picking up a brace apiece.
But the Timbers showed some fight in the match and a designated player of their own showed some flare on the evening as well. Kris Boyd put Portland up in the third minute with a lovely finish off a Kalif Alhassan cross. He later scored in the 70th minute off a set piece with a blast from the top of the box.
Though fellow nominees Eric Alexander, Jack Jewsbury, and Darlington Nagbe all had moments of inspiration in the loss, it was Boyd’s two-goal performance that put him over the top with 76% of the vote. He is your CenturyLink Man of the Match.
