PORTLAND, OR - This past weekend, men and women from around the Pacific Northwest gathered to participate in the 2nd annual Portland Timbers Corporate Cup. Teams put on their company colors to compete in a soccer tournament benefitting one of the Timbers’ Stand Together Community Partners: Portland YouthBuilders.
The tournament kicked off Friday evening at Kells Irish Restaurant & Pub where guests mingled and exchanged business cards. Portland Timbers players Eric Brunner and Joe Bendik as well as mascot Timber Joey joined the festivities to greet corporate teams and help facilitate a raffle whose proceeds benefitted Portland YouthBuilders.
Qualifying play kicked off on Saturday, Aug. 10 at the Howard M. Terpenning Complex at Tualatin Hills Park & Recreational District. The tournament was composed of three brackets: coed, men’s recreational and men’s competitive. A Timbers Army and Alumni game took place at 11:30am which featured former Timbers players John Bain, Mick Hoban and Scot Thompson. Six teams looked to advance out of bracket play against an impressive pool of Pacific Northwest companies including adidas, Alaska Airlines, CMD Agency, Lompoc Brewing, Microsoft, Nike, Providence Health and Services, Tursi’s Soccer Supply, Widmer Brothers and Wieden + Kennedy.
At the conclusion of the qualifying rounds, Nike dominated play sending a team to the finals in every division. Their corporate teams will take on Lompoc Brewing (Men’s Competitive), Widmer Brother’s (Men’s Recreational) and Tursi’s Soccer Supplies (Co-Ed) in the Championship matches at the Portland Timber’s home pitch, JELD-WEN Field. The finals will take place this Saturday, August 18th; the event is open to the public and the $5 admission at the gates will go to Portland YouthBuilers.
