With a new team and a new league, there are naturally questions about how soon players and coaches can establish familiarity and comfort with each other. But with midfielder Nikki Washington, Thorns FC need not worry.
The three-time NCAA National Champion is a product of the University of North Carolina, where she played under Thorns FC head coach Cindy Parlow Cone. Washington’s undeniable talent and familiarity with Cone led Thorns FC to sign her as a free agent on January 31, 2013.
However, the Thorns coach isn’t the only one who knows Washington. As a member of the United States U-20 Women’s National Team, Washington won the 2008 U-20 Women’s World Cup, playing alongside Thorns FC teammates Becky Edwards, Nikki Marshall, and Alex Morgan. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect, as Washington won her third NCAA National Championship the same week.
After recent stints with Pali Blues of the USL W-League, and Canberra United of the Australian W-League where she scored three goals in five games, Washington brings her winning ways to Portland. We recently gave Nikki Washington a Pop Quiz to see what she’s like away from the training grounds.
