PRESEASON RECAP | Portland Timbers 0, San Jose Earthquakes 0

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Portland Timbers ended their preseason camp in Tucson, Ariz., with a scoreless draw against the San Jose Earthquakes on Tuesday morning at the Kino Sports Complex, recording a second shutout in the team’s first three preseason games.

Utilizing more than 20 players for the third consecutive preseason match, the Timbers fielded one lineup for the first 60 minutes of the match, which was split into three, 30-minute periods. Portland head coach Caleb Porter brought in a new lineup for the final 30 minutes of the match which included the preseason debuts of five players.

Portland (1-0-2 in preseason) concluded its preseason slate in Tucson with an unbeaten record, conceding just one goal over 270 minutes of action, while extending the team’s preseason unbeaten streak in matches played in Tucson to nine straight games (5-0-4).

The Timbers saw two good scoring chances early as midfielder Dairon Asprilla struck the right post with a shot in the first 10 minutes of the match, while forward Maximiliano Urruti saw a header saved in the 22nd minute. Portland’s defense did well to keep the clean sheet in the 40th minute when San Jose defender Victor Bernardez fired a close-range free kick off the wall of players in front of goal and the Timbers blocked both rebound attempts by the Earthquakes (2-1-2 in preseason).

Portland forward Christian Volesky had a shot saved in the 64th minute and Timbers goalkeeper Andrew Weber did well to punch away a San Jose cross in the 71st minute. Weber cut out a second Earthquakes threat in the 79th minute to keep the score level.

The Timbers return to Portland on Wednesday and will remain in the Rose City for the duration of preseason.
