PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Timbers midfielder Diego Valeri scored a brace to lift the his side to an exciting 2-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes Friday evening at Providence Park in front of a sellout crowd of 21,144. The goals were Valeri's team-leading seventh and eighth of the season while the Portland defense held San Jose to five shots as they earned their second clean sheet of 2017.
12' - CHANCE (POR): Portland kept the pressure on and nearly scored in the 12th minute when Timbers midfielder Diego Valeri crossed in a ball that Guzmán hit on the volley towards the near post but was tipped wide by Bingham.
38' - RED CARD (SJ): Earthquakes midfielder Darwin Cerén was whistled for two yellow cards within 60 seconds of each other and was given the accompanying red card. San Jose was down to ten men for the rest of the match.
45+2' - CHANCE (POR): The Timbers continued to pepper the SJ net racking up 12 shots to the Quakes' zero for the half. Just before the halftime whistle, forward Fanendo Adi snapped a header down past Bingham but it pinged off the left post.
50' - GOAL (POR): The dam finally broke as Portland Zarek Valentin sprung Valeri on the break. Valeri chested the ball down to himself while Adi left it for him at the top of the box. Valeri sped in, and deftly hit it off the outside of his boot towards right post and into the back of the net to give Portland a 1-0 lead.
67' - SAVE (POR): San Jose sparked a counter of their own and while the Portland defense initially knocked the ball away, Quakes midfielder Tommy Thompson recovered it, then fired a knuckling shot on frame that Timbers goalkeeper Jake Gleeson parried down and covered up.
90+4' - GOAL (POR): Valeri scored his second goal of the match deep into stoppage time as he tapped in a rebound off an Adi shot that had pinged off the right post. Valeri slammed it home just moments before the final whistle to give Portland a 2-0 lead.
