Darlington Nagbe named to U.S. Men's National Team for two 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Timbers midfielder Darlington Nagbe has been named to the U.S. Men’s National Team’s roster for a pair of 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Costa Rica and Honduras, it was announced today.

Nagbe will not miss any league games with the Timbers, with the midfielder set to join the U.S. Men’s National Team following the Timbers away match against Seattle Sounders FC on Aug. 27, before returning to join the squad ahead of Portland’s next game, an away fixture on Sept. 9 against New York City FC at Yankee Stadium.

Nagbe, 27, and the United States will play host to Costa Rica at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J., on Friday, Sept. 1. Beginning at 3:30 p.m. (Pacific), the match against Costa Rica will be televised nationally on ESPN, UniMas and UDN. Following the match against Costa Rica, the United States will travel to face Honduras four days later at Estadio Olimpico in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, on Tuesday, Sept. 5. Beginning at 2:30 p.m. (Pacific), the match against Honduras will be broadcast live on beIN Sports.

Playing on the international stage with the United States, Nagbe has earned 20 appearances since making his debut in 2015, including three caps in the 2016 Copa America Centenario, featuring against Colombia and Argentina. Most recently, Nagbe made three straight starts (7/19-26) in the knockout round of the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup to help the United States win the biennial tournament.

The Timbers all-time leader in games played (207) across all eras (since 1975), Nagbe has made 20 regular-season appearances (20 starts) for the Timbers in 2017, recording three goals and four assists, recently scoring the game-winning goal in Portland’s 2-1 win against the Colorado Rapids on Aug. 23.
