A by-the-numbers look at how the Portland Timbers got into the Audi 2017 MLS Cup Playoffs

The Audi 2017 MLS Cup Playoffs are here and the Portland Timbers enter it atop the Western Conference with a bye into the Western Conference semifinals. While the Timbers await their next opponent—the lower seed to come out of the midweek Knockout Round matches—let’s take a by-the-numbers look at how the Timbers got to this point.


1Portland is the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference for the second time in its MLS history. It is the fifth time Portland has finished the regular season at the top of the conference or league in all eras of the club (1975, 2004, 2009, 2013, 2017). 


4Vytas tallied four assists during the 2017 campaign, which is the second-most by a Timbers defender in their MLS history. 


4 Forward Darren Mattocks drew a penalty kick four times this season, twice as many as any other Timbers player in the MLS era. Additionally, only two players in MLS drew more penalty kicks in 2017. 


8Sebastián Blanco is the second Timbers player to have eight or more goals and eight or more assists in the same MLS season (Diego Valeri - 2013, 2014, 2017). 


9 Midfielder Diego Valeri set the MLS record for most consecutive games with a goal at nine, two more than the previous record. The team went 5-2-2 over the stretch.


11Valeri was credited with 11 assists. It is the third time Valeri has recorded 10 or more assists in a single MLS season (2013 and 2014). 


15 Portland's 15 wins this season tie for the most MLS regular-season wins by the club. They previously hit the mark with the MLS Cup-winning season of 2015. 


21 Valeri scored 21 goals this season which marked the first time in MLS history a midfielder scored 20 goals or more in a season and it also set a club record across all eras. 


21 The Timbers scored in 21 consecutive matches this season, surpassing a team record for most consecutive games with at least one goal scored. The record was originally set in 1975. 


53 The Timbers topped the Western Conference with 53 points 2017. The total tally is tied for the second-most in the team’s MLS era.


60 Portland finished the year with 60 goals, which was the most in the Western Conference and is the second-most the Timbers have scored in all eras of the club. 


92Darlington Nagbe ended 2017 with a passing completion percentage of 92 percent on 1,340 attempts, which is the highest of MLS player this season with at least 250 passes attempted. 


101Diego Chara finished fifth in MLS with 101 tackles for the season. It is the fifth time Chara totaled 100 or more tackles in a single season.
