Beckie, Sinclair, Rodríguez set to compete at 2022 Concacaf W Championship

Beckie, Sinclair named to Canada Women’s National Team roster, Rodríguez selected by Costa Rica Women’s National Team for tournament in Mexico July 4-18

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC announced today that forwards Janine Beckie and Christine Sinclair will represent Canada at the Concacaf W Championship and midfielder Rocky Rodríguez has been named to the Costa Rica Women’s National Team roster to participate in tournament, taking place from July 4-July 18 in Mexico.

The group stage will be played from July 4-11, while the semifinals are scheduled for July 14 and the final is set for July 18. The tournament will determine berths for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and the 2024 Summer Olympics in France.

Beckie, Sinclair and Canada are looking to qualify for an eighth consecutive World Cup after advancing to the Round of 16 in 2019. Canada will play in Group B, opening the tournament on July 5 against Trinidad and Tobago at 7 p.m. (Pacific). The reigning Olympic gold medalists will then square off against Panama on July 8 at 7 p.m. (Pacific) and close out group play against Costa Rica on July 11 at 4 p.m. (Pacific). All of Canada’s group stage matches will be available to viewing on Paramount+.

Rodríguez and Costa Rica last qualified for the World Cup in 2015, marking Costa Rica’s first appearance in the tournament. Costa Rica joins Canada in Group B, opening the tournament against Panama on July 5 at 4 p.m. (Pacific). Las Ticas second group match is against Trinidad and Tobago on July 8 at 4 p.m. (Pacific), while they close out group play against Canada. All of Costa Rica’s matches will be broadcast on Paramount+.

The top two finishers in each group after round-robin play will advance to the semifinals and earn World Cup berths. The third-place finisher in each group will advance to the 10-team inter-confederation playoff tournament that will be held in February of 2023 to decide the final three teams for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Concacaf W Championship winner will also receive an automatic berth to the 2024 Olympics in Paris while the second and third place finishers will participate in a playoff in September 2023 for Concacaf’s second and final Olympic berth.
