The Storyline

The Portland Timbers (2-0-0, 6pts) enter their third and final Phase One match of Leagues Cup 2025 with a +5 goal differential. After two consecutive shutout victories to start the tournament, the Timbers are the only team that has yet to concede a goal in the 2025 competition.

In the first match of Phase One, Portland earned a 4-0 win over Liga MX side Atlético de San Luis at Providence Park on July 30 with goals from David Da Costa, Kevin Kelsy, Ariel Lassiter and Felipe Mora. Most recently, the Timbers secured a 1-0 victory against Liga MX side Querétaro at Providence Park on August 2, with Cristhian Paredes delivering the game-winning goal. Goalkeeper James Pantemis has kept Portland’s shutout streak alive in the tournament with seven saves across the first two matches.

Playing in their third Leagues Cup campaign, the Timbers have a 5-3-0 all-time record in the tournament. Notably, Wednesday’s match will mark Portland’s third match against Club América and first since 2021. The two sides squared off in the 2021 Concacaf Champions League Quarterfinals, sharing points in Leg 1 with a 1-1 draw at Providence Park before América advanced in the tournament with a 3-1 win over the Timbers at Estadio Azteca in Leg 2. Felipe Mora is the only active Timbers player with a goal against Club América, scoring Portland’s lone goal in Leg 2. Diego Chara, Zac McGraw, Cristhian Paredes and Dario Zuparic also made appearances against América in the 2021 competition. Paredes played for Club América in 2017 before joining the Timbers on loan in 2018.
