Matchday | Timbers battle Real Salt Lake in MLS Cup Playoffs Wild Card Game

Wednesday night marks the start of the Audi 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs as the Portland Timbers host Real Salt Lake in the MLS Cup Playoffs Western Conference Wild Card Game at Providence Park.

How The Wild Card Game Works

The Wild Card Game is a single-elimination match, contested between the conference's No. 8 (Timbers) and No. 9 (Real Salt Lake) seeds.
At the end of regulation, if the score is tied, no extra time will be played. There will immediately be a penalty kick shootout to determine the winner.
The winner advances to the Round One Best-of-3 Series, and will face the Western Conference's No. 1 seed San Diego FC.

The Storyline

The Portland Timbers and Real Salt Lake will face off for the 41st time in MLS regular season and postseason play and for the third time in 2025. In the regular season, the Timbers hold a 14-10-12 advantage in the all-time series, despite having a scoreless draw at Salt Lake on May 14 and dropping a 1-0 result on July 16 of this year. In the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, the visitors hold a 3-1-0 advantage all-time.

Portland has only suffered defeat twice in their last 11 matches against RSL dating back to August 7, 2021 (5-2-4). Notably, the last time the two sides met in the playoffs, the Timbers emerged victorious 2-0 and advanced to the 2021 MLS Cup. When hosting Salt Lake at Providence Park, The Timbers have a mark of 9-4-7 across all matches in the regular and postseason.

Felipe Mora leads the Timbers with five goals against RSL in 10 appearances (6 starts), while Antony has tallied a goal and two assists in three matches (two starts) against Salt Lake.
