PORTLAND, Ore. –
Members of the Portland Timbers coaching staff will attend the USL Showcase this weekend in search of potential talent for the team’s 2008 roster. Last season, head coach
Gavin Wilkinson
discovered current midfielder
Lawrence Olum
at the first-annual event in Tampa, Fla.
The 2007 USL Showcase will be held Charleston, S.C., at Blackbaud Stadium, home of the Charleston Battery of the USL First Division, from Sunday through Tuesday and feature nearly 90 collegiate and amateur players in search of reaching the professional ranks.
While at the combine, Timbers coaches will also have the opportunity to take a look at local talent as players from Oregon State University and Gonzaga University will be in attendance. College players from around the country hailing from all over the world including Canada, UK, Colombia and Jamaica make up the talent at this year’s showcase event.
Last season, Wilkinson found Olum at the 2006 USL Showcase and invited him to the Timbers invite-tryout in January 2007. After signing a two-year deal, Olum appeared in 20 games and recorded three goals and one assist for the Timbers last season.
