Portland Timbers defender
Justin Thompson
was named to the USL First Division Team of the Week for Week 9, it was announced today by United Soccer Leagues. Thompson scored his second goal of the season in a short-handed draw against the Atlanta Silverbacks last week.
Thompson earned his first Team of the Week selection of the season by scoring a goal and aiding in a solid defensive effort in the team’s 2-2 draw against Atlanta on June 12 at PGE Park. With the match tied at 1-1 and a man short, Thompson lifted the Timbers to a 2-1 margin by heading in the go-ahead strike on a long pass from
Scot Thompson
with his back to goal. He was also a part of the nine-man Timbers side, due to two red-card ejections, that held Atlanta to just 13 shots on the night.
In his second season with the Timbers, Thompson, 27, has appeared in 13 matches, logged 1,140 minutes and recorded two goals in 2008.
The Timbers are on a 12-day break between matches. They face the Carolina RailHawks on June 27 on Fox Soccer Channel as part of a two-game road trip to the Southeast.
Portland returns home for an international exhibition match against Mexico’s Monarcas Morelia on July 3 at PGE Park. Morelia features three Mexican National Team members, including midfielder
Omar Trujillo
. Tickets, starting at $16, are available through the PGE Park box office, area Ticketmaster locations, online at
www.ticketmaster.com
or by phone at (503) 224-4400.
