Timbers' Thompson a finalist for Defender of the Year award

PORTLAND, Ore.
- Portland Timbers defender Scot Thompson is one of three finalists for the USL First Division’s 2005 Defender of the Year award, it was announced today.




Thompson, 24, started in 26 of the Timbers’ 28 league matches this season, missing only two games to try out for Sunderland AFC after impressing in an exhibition against the Premiership club on July 23.




A second-year Timber who played for UCLA and the Los Angeles Galaxy of MLS before joining Portland in 2004, Thompson knocked in four goals and tallied two assists this season.




Thompson is up against Seattle’s Taylor Graham and Montreal’s Gabe Gervais, who took home the honor the past two seasons.




The winner will be announced at the media banquet during the USL First Division Championship weekend of Oct. 1, along with the league’s Coach of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player recipients.
