Timbers top Pilots 2-1 in preseason play

PORTLAND
, Ore.
– The Portland Timbers scored two second-half goals, one by former Pilot standout Garrett Marcum, to defeat the University of Portland, 2-1, Friday night at Merlo Field in exhibition play.
Down by a goal at the break, defender Garrett Marcum evened the score in the 60th minute. After knocking down a clear from Pilot goalkeeper Nick Comstock, Marcum went far post with a chip shot from just inside the right corner of the box.
Second half subs, forwards David Hague and Chris Bagley provided an offensive spark off the bench. Hague, a rookie from Jarrow, England, was on the receiving end of a long pass from midfielder Tom Poltl near the left corner of the box. Hague made a move to the inside, beating a UP defender, then rifled a shot five yards out to make it 2-1 in the Timbers favor. Poltl was credited with the assist.
Bagley led the Timbers with five shots on goal.
The Pilots took the early 1-0 lead in the 5th minute on a Timbers own goal. Defender Cameron Knowles slipped the ball into the back of the net attempting to break up a cross into the box by heading the ball back to his goalkeeper Bayard Elfvin.
The Timbers outshot the Pilots 22-7. Elfvin recorded three saves on the night.
Friday’s match was the first of two preseason matches for the Timbers this weekend. On Sunday, April 15, the Timbers are scheduled to play USL First Division rival, the Vancouver Whitecaps at 4 p.m. at Alder Creek Middle School in Milwaukie, Ore.
