PORTLAND, Ore. – The United Soccer League announced today that Portland Timbers defender Justin Thompson was selected to the USL First Division Team of the Week for Week 15. Thompson is a member of the Timbers’ backline that has recorded 10 shutouts this season.
Earning his first Team of the Week selection this season, Thompson is now the 10th different Portland player to receive Team of the Week honors this season. The Timbers have now had a player selected to the Team of the Week for the past six weeks.
On July 26, Thompson helped lead the Timbers to their 10th shutout of the season in a 0-0 draw against the Atlanta Silverbacks at PGE Park. Thompson has also anchored a backline that has helped the Timbers post an unbeaten record of 7-0-4 at PGE Park this season.
The first-place Timbers (11-3-4, 37pts) face Northwest rival the Seattle Sounders (9-5-5, 32pts) on Wednesday in Seattle. Seattle currently sits in second place in the USL First Division, five points behind Portland. Timbers broadcaster Andy McNamara will broadcast the Cascadia Cup match live on www.portlandtimbers.com.
