Along with finalizing their seeding position in the Audi 2017 MLS Cup Playoffs on Sunday, the Portland Timbers could clinch their fourth-ever Cascadia Cup if they defeat Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Providence Park on MLS Decision Day, presented by AT&T (1pm PT, ROOT SPORTS).
Though Seattle Sounders FC currently sit in first place of the three-team competition on nine points, their Cascadia slate of matches are finished. Should the Timbers defeat Vancouver, Portland would vault Seattle to end at 11 points and claim the cup. A draw, however, will find Seattle claiming it on tiebreakers.
Created by the supporters of the Timbers, Sounders and Whitecaps, the Cascadia Cup has been around since 2004. It was contested by all three teams in USL until 2009, when the Sounders made their MLS debut. The Whitecaps and Timbers continued battling for the Cup in the lower divisions until 2011, when both moved up into MLS, allowing the Sounders to get back in on the competition.
Should the Timbers win, it would mark their fourth cup overall and second in the MLS era. Vancouver have won six Cascadia Cups, while Seattle has four.
After Sunday, the teams will have met a total of nine times this year, with each club playing the others three times during the MLS regular season.
