On a special Independence Day MLS tilt, the Portland Timbes traveled to the StubHub Center to face the LA Galaxy.
The first half was scoreless thanks in part to this fantastic save from Timbers 'keeper Donovan Ricketts:
The second half provided more fireworks. Against the run of the play, LA's Marcelo Sarvas collects a loose ball on the edge of the Timbers box and scores in the 65th minute:
Diego Valeri brought the attack back for the Timbers. With defender Jorge Villafaña working the left wing with a nice cross, Fanendo Adi snapped a header which was deflected back to top of the box. Valeri came flying in and arrowed a shot into the back of the net.
Three minutes later, Villafaña continued his strong night on the left side. He again played a cross into the box which Valeri connected with. LA defender Tommy Meyer made the initial block but Villafaña scooped up the rebound and hammered it home.
Ricketts kept up his solid play in the second half as well. After a foul right on the edge of the 18-yard box, LA's Juninho lashed a free kick over the wall that Ricketts pushed up and over the bar in the 77th minute.
With the Galaxy pushing in the 86th minute, a cross pinged around in the six-yard box before deflecting off a Timbers defender and in for an own goal to make it 2-2.
